Mrs. Costin - Kindergarten

Hello and welcome to kindergarten!  I am so excited for the 2017-18 school year, and  I am really looking forward to getting to know your student as well as your family.  Our kindergarten team has many exciting and engaging activities planned for this school year.

A little about me, I am a Navy wife so I know the pride and joy, as well as, the challenges that come with this lifestyle.  My husband and I have been married for going on 25 years.  We have two beautiful children.  Our son lives in Indiana and works in the agricultural production field and our daughter is a junior at LHS.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.  I graduated from City University of Seattle in June of 2012.  I have several years of experience in a variety of capacities in the education field.  I was an instructional aid, worked in after school care, and was a substitute teacher prior to earning my bachelor's degree.  Since earning my degree I have had opportunities to teach in grades K through 2nd grade.  This is my third year teaching kindergarten full time, and I love it!
In my classroom, you will find students working all around the room in flexible seating.  I believe that learning should be fun and students should have a voice in what helps them be successful.  Sometimes our classroom is loud but we don't mind because we are learning and helping each other.

Some of the things your student will learn in math this year are how to identify and count numbers to 100, compare and describe measurable attributes, add and subtract within 10, identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes.  In reading, your student will learn sight words, letter sounds, letter blends, and reading comprehension strategies.  We will use the Reading Mastery Program, which teaches students letter sounds and how to blend words.  In addition to this I teach students strong decoding skills so they leave as readers.  In writing, I use the Lucy Calkins/Teacher's College writing workshop model.  Your student will use a combination of drawing and writing to compose narrative, informative, and opinion pieces this year as they learn that they too can write to teach others.

As a class we have discussed and written down 5 rules that are important to us.  Our classroom rules are built around respect!  We will work together to learn how to respect ourselves, others, and the things in our classroom.  My behavior system is easy.  If your student follows the classroom rules and respects those around them they will earn a stamp.  When they earn a stamp they get to participate in free choice play/social time for the last few minutes of the day.

Each day your student will bring home a folder that contains the work they’ve done that day.  Please try to check the folder and have your student bring it back to school daily.    Communication is SO important to me.  Please do not hesitate to call, email, write a note, or meet with me before or after school.  I’m here to partner with you as we help your student be successful and have fun while learning many amazing things this year.
